Description

Evergreen shrub with tiny, bright yellow flowers in racemes up to 3 inches long. The leaves are dense, lustrous, dark green and leathery, turning bronze, gold, crimson, and purple in fall. Fruit: Deep blue and purple berries in drooping clusters--edible when ripe.




Common Uses

Oregon Grape's root and bark have components that help relieve pain, reduce fever, purify and cleanse the blood, and gradually restore health. It is used to treat kidney problems, is diuretic, and helps with stomach ailments. Used externally, it treats rheumatism and heals wounds.




History

Although not really a grape, it is the state flower of Oregon. Its root is what is prized for healing, and it was listed in official pharmacopoeias until 1950.
