Description
Annual with leafy stems, it produces white, two-lipped flowers in racemes at the tops of stems. Its leaves are yellow-green to dark green, and it yields tiny, dark brown seeds. Blooms July to August.
Common Uses
It contains vitamins A and C, for immune health, and is an antioxidant. It is often used in combination with other herbs to fight against chills, coughs, and head colds.
History
In India, basil is a sacred herb dedicated to the gods Vishnu and Krishna. In India's past, sprigs were laid on the breasts of the dead to protect them from evil in the next world and offer them entrance to paradise.
