Oregano

Family:
Labiatae
Latin Name:
Origanum species

Description

Aromatic, herbaceous perennial with erect, hairy, square stems. Flowers are rose-purple to white, tubular, in terminal spikelets up to 1 inch long. Produces four seed-like nutlets and grows 1-2 feet high. Blooms: July-September

Common Uses

Oregano's primary ingredients, thymol and carvacrol, have been found to loosen phlegm in the lungs and relieve spasms in the bronchial passages. Many commercial cough remedies contain thymol. Used externally, oregano alleviates pain and inflammation and disinfects wounds.

History

It wasn't until World War II that oregano caught on as a cooking herb in the U.S. Service men returning from the Mediterranean had developed a taste for it, and once pizza crossed over to American kitchens, oregano became a staple.
