Onion
Family:
Liliaceae |
Latin Name:
Allium cepa |
Description
Biennial or perennial that grows from a bulb. The erect stem carries an umbel of pink, white, or purple flowers, along with four to six narrow, hollow, blue-green leaves. Its fruit is a capsule containing black seeds. Height: 4 feet. Blooms: June-August.
Common Uses
Onion is used for its diuretic and stomachic properties. It helps promote urine flow, thus eliminating wastes from the body. The World Health Organization recognizes onion's ability to treat coughs, colds, asthma, bronchitis, and atherosclerosis. Onions also contain oligomers, which help protect the colon from the growth of harmful bacteria.
History
Onion is the plant most often depicted in Egyptian tomb paintings. Alexander the Great fed it to all his troops to give them strength before battle. A yellow-brown dye can be made from the skins of the bulbs.
