Nutmeg

Description

A spreading evergreen tree that has dark green oval leaves and small, pale yellow flowers. The lacy scarlet covering around the nutmeg seed is mace. Height: 40 feet or more




Common Uses

Nutmeg is beneficial to circulation, aids digestion, and increases the body's absorption of nutrients in the intestine. It is often used in general, overall body tonics for these reasons. It is also known to relieve vomiting and nausea, and is an antispasmodic.




History

In 17th century Europe, nutmeg encased in silver was used to induce sleep. It was once used as a hallucinogen, while the Greeks and Romans thought of it as a mental stimulant.
