Nettle
Family:
Urticaceae |
Latin Name:
Urtica dioica |
Description
Erect stalk with dark, drooping, green leaves, and small white flowers. Fine, hollow silica-tipped hairs cover the entire plant. Height: 2-3 feet. Blooms: summer
Common Uses
Nettle has a high iron content, and because of this it used in Europe to treat anemia. Nettle's diuretic action can help remove toxins from the body, and it has often been used in folk medicine to help regulate the menstrual cycle.
History
Nettle was used by Europeans to make sail cloth, fishing lines, and clothing. In World War I, Germany used nettle cloth as a substitute for cotton. One of the compounds in nettle that causes its sting is the same chemical that causes red ant bites to be painful. It is high in vitamin C and iron.
