Description
Perennial shrub with smooth, gray bark. At each branch, there are 3 sharp spines up to an inch long. Yellow flowers bloom at the ends of branches, hanging down in 2 1/2 inch racemes.
Common Uses
One of the main constituents in barberry, berberine, is reported to be astringent, anesthetic, and antibacterial. Berberine also has sedative, anticonvulsant, and uterine stimulant properties. It is often used to reduce inflammation of the urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts, and has been shown effective in some studies for treating diarrhea.
History
In ancient Egypt, a Barberry syrup was used to combat the plague, while in medieval Europe, it was used as an antiseptic, purgative, and tonic.
