Description
Mistletoe are shrubs that live on trees. They have evergreen leaves that are thick, leathery, and oblong. The berries are small, white, oblong and have sticky flesh with one seed inside. Height: 1-2 feet. Blooms: Midspring to early summer.
Common Uses
European mistletoe has a resin called viscin that acts as a temporary pain reliever. American mistletoe contains amines that stimulate the heart and nervous system. HOWEVER, MISTLETOE IS FAIRLY TOXIC AND SHOULD ONLY BE USED BY PROFESSIONALS.
History
The name for American mistletoe, Phoradendron means "tree thief" because it takes its nutrients from host trees. It has been used as a scent in perfumes.
