Description
Square-stemmed perennials with tiny flowers in whorls that can be purple, pink, or white. The leaves are opposite, fragrant, simple and toothed and they produce four smooth, ovoid nutlets. Height: up to 2 feet. Bloom: July and August
Common Uses
The mint family has many uses in treating colds, coughs, and fever. Some species of mint are used for diarrhea and to relieve earaches. Applied topically, the essential oil (diluted in water) eases burning, itching skin and sunburn. Menthol oil, found in mint, is an effective local anesthetic.
History
American colonists drank mint tea for headaches, heartburn, indigestion, gas, and to help them sleep. They also enjoyed it because it was the only tea that wasn't taxed by the King of England.
