Milk Thistle

Description

Annual or biennial with sharp spines on its reddish-purple flowers. It has white markings on the leaves and milky white sap. Height: 5-10 feet. Blooms: July-August




Common Uses

In cases of acute hepatitis, milk thistle extract helps people recover more quickly and prevents the condition from becoming chronic. According to studies, it can help reverse liver cell damage, normalize elevated levels of liver enzymes, and improve such symptoms as abdominal discomfort, decreased appetite, and fatigue.




History

Milk thistle has been used to support liver health for 2,000 years. During the 16th century, it was said to be the best remedy for depression, and in the 17th century it was sometimes prescribed for jaundice and gallstones.
