Marjoram

Description
Bushy plant with a dense, shallow root system. It has tiny white or pink spherical flowers that are clustered in spikes or corymbs of 3-5 flowers. Its pale, gray-green leaves are spicy and aromatic. Fruit are light brown, very small nutlets. Height: 1 foot. Blooms August-September.
Common Uses
Marjoram has digestive, antispasmodic, carminative, diaphoretic, and diuretic properties. As a tea, it aids digestion, increases sweating, and encourages menstruations. Laboratory tests have shown marjoram to inhibit viruses and demonstrate anti-oxidant properties.
History
Marjoram gets its name from the ancient city of Marjora, Italy. In Crete marjoram was a badge of honor worn by the most distinguished leaders. Citizens of Crete used it as a seasoning and a tea, and as a hair and eyebrow pomade.
