Male Fern

Family:
Polypodiaceae
Latin Name:
Aspidium filix-mas

Description

Deciduous or semi-evergreen fern with thick rhizomes and crowns of broadly lanceolate fronds up to 36 inches long. Grows in damp woodlands and in hilly and mountainous areas.

Common Uses

It is good for sores, boils, carbuncles, swollen glands and epidemic flu. It inhibits bleeding of a hot nature, and is combined with cedar leaves for uterine bleeding. With other alteratives like honeysuckle, forsythia, and dandelion, it treats toxic blood conditions.

History

North American Indians used it to reduce pain during childbirth and to increase lactation in wet nurses. The peasants of Berri, the Sami of Norway, and the trappers of Quebec all ate the young fiddleheads in spring and slept on beds of fern to keep away insects, relieve rheumatism, or prevent children from bedwetting.
