Lungwort
Family:
Lichenes |
Latin Name:
Pulmonaria officinalis |
Description
Broad-leaved perennial ground cover with foot long leaves coming from short stems. Leaves are hairy, mottled with white, and oval. Conical, purplish-blue flowers appear in April and May.
Common Uses
It restores lung elasticity, making it effective for ailments that damage the lungs. Its primary uses are to treat bronchitis, laryngitis, and reduce bronchial congestion.
History
Lungwort got its name because it looked like lungs. Using the Doctrine of Signatures (if it looks like something, it can help heal/remedy it), Medieval physicians used it for a variety of lung ailments, including bronchitis.
