Lobelia

Family:
Lobeliaceae
Latin Name:
Lobelia inflata

Description

Branched and hairy stems with toothed, alternate leaves 3 and 1/2 inches long. Its blue, tubular flowers form loose spikes at the ends of branches, and it produces a two-celled capsule bearing many tiny brown seeds. Height: 1-3 feet.

Common Uses

Lobelia can be used for bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis because it relaxes the muscles of the bronchial tubes. Externally, it relaxes muscles--especially useful for sprains and back problems. It is also used commercially in over-the-counter smoking lozenges. THIS HERB IS TOXIC AND SHOULD ONLY BE USED BY MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS. It's on the FDA's restricted list.

History

Lobelia was once used to help people stop smoking. It was promoted as a tobacco that would help with weight loss--which makes sense since taking lobelia in any form induces vomiting. It has powerful effects on the central nervous system, and all its parts contain toxins.
