Description

Deciduous tree up to 100 feet high, with smooth gray bark, heart-shaped leaves, and clusters of pale yellow flowers with wing-like bracts.




Common Uses

The flowers have sedative properties, and play a role in relaxing nervous tension. Linden can also lower blood pressure, treat nervous palpitations of the heart, and relieve stress and panic. Flowers can also be used to treat colds, coughs, fever, infections, and headache. The leaves are used to induce sweating during fevers.




History

Linden wood has been used to make the keys and sounding boards of musical instruments as well as the Mosquito fighter planes of World War II. Europeans used its inner bark to make rough shoes called chodaki, as well as baskets and hats.
