Description
Small, very attractive tree from 10-20 feet with grayish bark and stout spines where the leaf stalks join the branches. In the leaf, axils grow clusters of five-petaled flowers that are white inside and pink- or purple-tinged outside. They are followed by the well-known sour, yellow fruit.
Common Uses
The fruit is an excellent source of vitamin C and has cooling properties. Today, hot lemon juice and honey is still a favorite home remedy for colds and its astringency is useful for sore throats. Lemons are an excellent preventative medicine and have a wide range of uses in the domestic medicine chest. The bioflavonoids in the fruit help to strengthen the inner lining of blood vessels, especially veins and capillaries, and help counter varicose veins and easy bruising.
History
The lemon was associated with long sea voyages and slavery because it was used to fight scurvy on the long journeys. They became so indispensable on ocean trips that England made it a law for all warships and trade vessels to carry lemons. They were considered a treat for royalty in France.
